Welcome to Petit Roll – A Cosy Corner for Japanese Home Cooking

Hello and welcome!Japanese cookery tutor standing in her kitchen

Hello, I’m Madoka — founder of Petit Roll, passionate home cook, and your guide on this journey into the heart of everyday Japanese food, based in Medway, Kent.

I teach Japanese home cooking through lessons, private events, and an online membership called Kizuna Kitchen.

I was born and raised in Kyoto, in a home where the kitchen was always full of life. I didn’t learn to cook by standing next to my mum with a recipe book , but I was surrounded by her incredible home-cooked meals, made from scratch and shared with everyone around us. My dad was a baker, and the scent of fresh bread from his bakery—Petit Roll—still lives in my memory.

Our home was a place where food didn’t just feed people ... it connected them. Neighbours dropped by with vegetables from their gardens or fish they’d caught, and my mum turned those gifts into meals we all shared. That’s where I first saw how food can bring joy, spark conversation, and build community.

That same spirit is at the heart of Petit Roll today.

A Different Way to Cook. A Different Way to Eat.

In many homes, dinner is rushed. Repeated. Predictable.
It keeps us going, but it doesn’t always make us feel connected, cared for, or alive.

I’ve noticed that so many families cook the same five meals every week.
Spaghetti Bolognese. Fish and chips. A curry. Maybe a roast.
They’re familiar. They’re comforting. But over time, the flavours blur. The textures repeat. The joy fades.

What if there was another way?

I grew up with meals made of small, separate dishes. A main, two sides, and rice.
It’s a style of eating that brings variety to every bite, and I’ve found that even the smallest meal feels more cared for that way.
Each part has its own texture, colour, and story. And somehow, that makes the whole meal feel more balanced. More human.

I’m not here to tell anyone they’re doing it wrong.
I’m here to offer a different rhythm.

A rhythm that’s simpler, lighter, and more joyful.
A way of cooking that’s rooted in care.
A way of eating that brings more conversation, more appreciation, and more balance to everyday life.

This is the heart of my work. In my online membership Kizuna Kitchen, in my lessons, and in my own kitchen.

It doesn’t need to be perfect.
It doesn’t need to be fully Japanese.
It just starts with small changes that gently bring more wellness into your everyday meals.

If this sounds like the kind of change you’ve been quietly looking for, I’d love to welcome you.

Thank you for being here — I can’t wait to cook with you.
